Well, why not?
A Combat Controller qualified as a Joint Terminal Attack Controller for those new to the profession, directs the action of combat aircraft engaged in close air support from a forward position. They are a force multiplier and force enabler invaluable in modern warfare and shape the battlespace like no other individual can. Though the profession’s name has changed over the years their history can be traced back to World War 1 and the first use of aircraft in a theatre of war and have save countless lives.
Firstly, I am not a Combat Controller, but nor am I an F1 driver and I have followed the sport for nearly 40 years. Combat Controller is the same. I first heard of the Royal Australian Air Force raising Controllers in 2008 and it has interested me ever since.
I never considered using any other Special Operations background for Damien Hunter. I wanted him to be Australian and to have at some time served in the Royal Australian Air Force with a wide range of advanced skills and experience to carry the series. A JTAC qualified Combat Controller is a perfect fit for the idea I had in my mind and forms a central core of what type of man Damien is. Damien’s ascent to a contractor with the Taipan organisation is described fully in Battle Born, as is his military service.
My choice was simply based on something that already interested me and I knew two RAAF Combat Controllers to lace in reality with the fictional creation who is, Damien Hunter.
